Which canoes should your group use? There are two factors to consider: The obvious one is price. Aluminum canoes are certainly cheaper to rent, get the job done and have been doing so for 40+ years. But they weigh a relative "ton" and in reality, they really don't do as well as our Souris Rivers. We had so many more damaged aluminum canoes back than Souris Rivers we decided to discontinue aluminum rentals and now offer Souris River Kevlars exclusively in our outfitting program. Everybody benefits with Souris River Canoes in rentals. Souris River Quetico 17's only 43 lbs. which is about 24 lbs. less than lightweight aluminum canoes. They are much easier to paddle, have bigger payload capacities and offer good stability and control in all conditions. Depending on the size of your crew with consideration of their physical and mental fortitude, you as the adult leader may be carrying a lot of canoes over each portage. Lighter is definitely better!  Souris River hulls fly by aluminum canoes which means your paddlers burn less energy getting to where you're going. Light/better = Less whining/more fun!
